3D-CULTURES: WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW ARE THEY USED

Cell cultures are used in many different applications, from basic research to drug development and industrial settings. Classically, cell lines are grown eitheras monolayers or in suspension. This approach is simple and efficient but does not provide cells with the natural biophysical and biochemical environment that is needed for mirroring the complex features of tissues seen in vivo. To this end, techniques to culture “organoids”, 3D structures comprising multiple cell types obtained from differentiating human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) and/or mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), have emerged.
