Ligand Bindning Assays
A ligand binding assay (LBA), also known as a binding assay or receptor-ligand interaction assay, is a laboratory technique used to determine the strength and characteristics of the interaction between the receptor and ligand.
Ligands can be small molecules, peptides, proteins, antibodies, or other substances that interact with a specific receptor or target molecule. This information is important in various fields such as pharmacology, biochemistry, medicine, biotechnology, and molecular biology.
Ligand binding assays are widely used in pharmaceutical research during development processes to evaluate the potency and selectivity of drug candidates, study protein-protein interactions, screen for new ligands or inhibitors, and investigate the mechanisms of receptor-ligand interactions. They are essential for studying the pharmacokinetics (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) and pharmacodynamics (relationship between drug concentration and its effect) of a compound. These assays can determine the concentration of a compound in biological samples, assess its stability, evaluate its interactions with plasma proteins (or proteins in other matrices), and monitor its tissue distribution over time.
