The liver is the primary site of insulin clearance from plasma and excessive accumulation of fat in the liver significantly impairs the process. This leads to hyperinsulinemia, which may further drive hepatic lipogenesis and has been shown to be “associated with the progression of hepatic fibrosis in patients with NASH”1
